A Glimmer of Hope
by Bridget Ierace

Kino was content with his life
But when Coyotito got stung
And the doctor would not come
What was he to do?

Kino went to the ocean
He dove under the sea
And what he found would surprise you and me
It was the Pearl of the World

Kino was happy with his pearl
He wanted many things
Unaware of the misfortune it would soon bring
But the doctor returned and worry was gone

But then that night,
An intruder came
And Kino was full of shame
Juana wanted it to go but Kino said no

Juan Tomas and the neighbors headed off with him
They went to sell the fortune
But no money would the buyers give him
So angrily, Kino stormed out

To the capital I must go, he said
But Juana in fear had a different plan
But then Kino was attacked by another man
So Juana unwillingly returned the pearl

Now without a house
And with a canoe
Kino and his family left before the town knew
They had no choice after killing a man

Running at night and
Sleeping by day
Just because there was no other way
Until the trackers came

With them close on their trail
Kino turned to Juana and said
You'll be better off without me instead
But Juana refused and they continued on

Kino went to kill the trackers
And succeeded but with a cost,
His only son was forever lost
And they returned home

Kino got rid of the pearl
It was gone forever
But that was better
Though a glimmer of hope still shines
